Reflection Questions

  • If you had to sum up the essence of your faith in a short phrase, how might you explain it to someone from this country?

  • Cabo Verde’s location off the west coast of Africa shaped it’s cultural blending of European and African Influences. How might this uniqueness be reflected in Christianity on the islands?

  • C V has few natural resources and a largely rural population. How might the faith of Christians here speak to living simply and gratefully?

  • What might the experience of Christians in C V teach you about expressing joy and perseverance in hardship?

Apostate or Deconversion

Someone who at one time was a believer but later fell into unbelief is known as someone who has experienced apostate or deconversion. The experience is often gradual, not due to one specific reason. While the result isn’t necessarily atheism and is not usually influenced by an atheists, they are often grouped into the athiest category. Some people experience a sense of liberation and freedom when stepping away from religion while others feel a loss and mourn lack of sense of community – one of the reasons that the Sunday Assembly was born. Sunday Assembly is unbelievers gathered for worship because the practice of routine is valued above God.

9 Reasons behind Apostasy – Though not Guaranteed

  • Homes where only one parent participates in religion or it’s not enforced

    • Duet 6:7 says parents are to be involved in the religious education and formation of their children, not just drop them off at church

  • Going to college and having one's faith challenged or encounter new ideas that contradict your religious beliefs

    • Teach youth to think critically about their faith

  • Meeting people of other cultures and religious beliefs

  • A misfortune – like an unanswered prayer or the loss of a loved one

    • Our world experiences suffering (Book of Job) because of sin in the world, yet God is attentive to our cries, Christ suffered for us

  • Relationships, whether romantic or a colleague or friend

  • Politics

    • Specifically, if they lean liberal. They often interpret the stifling side of right-wing politics as impacting their beliefs

  • Sex

    • They have homosexual or bisexual tendencies

    • They feel guilt or shame for their urges

    • If their desire is condemned

      • God created these urges, but it can cause us individual harm

      • God does offer forgiveness and grace even in this

  • Satan & Hell

    • If it was strongly emphasized in their home/church it can lead to overwhelming resentment

    • Not to be used as a motivational force to make kids be good, it corrupts God’s Word and His mercy

  • Religious colleagues, clergymen, or acquaintances who act counter to their beliefs

    • Church needs to be a safe place to express doubts

    • As Christians we need to support, encourage, love, admonish, and forgive one another

Witnessing To SBNR

  • Pray for the conversation

  • Acknowledge that the person to be upset with is Satan not the person. They are in Spiritual Warfare and don't even know it.

  • Ask them about their deconversion – what led to those things?

  • Acknowledge we live in a sinful and broken world

  • Jesus didn’t come into the world to condemn it, but to restore it

Cabo Verde Cultural Etiquette

  • It’s considered to rude to eat without sharing, so they don’t eat in public places like on the bus, etc.

  • Touching or patting someones head or hair is not appreciated

  • They open on island time with a relaxed laid back schedule
