Legend of El Caleuche

The myth tells of a ghost ship, El Caleuche, which sails the waters around the Chiloé Archipelago, appearing and disappearing suddenly, manned by spirits and magical beings. It is a white ship is full of bright lights and laughter. Those who resist it’s call turn into marine animals.

Language:

The official language of Chile is Spanish, and it is spoken throughout the country.

You'll also hear a variety of indigenous languages, such as Mapudungun, Quechua, and Aymara, particularly in regions with significant indigenous populations.


Etiquette:

  • Greetings: A firm handshake is common, and friends often greet with a kiss on the cheek.

  • Punctuality: Being slightly late (10-15 minutes) is generally acceptable for social events.

  • Dress Code: Dress smartly in urban areas. More casual attire is acceptable in rural areas.

  • Hospitality: It’s polite to bring a small gift, such as flowers or wine, when visiting someone’s home.

  • Dining Etiquette: Wait for the host to say "buen provecho" before starting to eat.
